Isn’t sleep such a funny thing? I’ve been thinking recently about how we can do a lot while we sleep that makes us look like we’re awake.
I’ve been known to do many things in my sleep…in fact, I’ve had a shower 3 times in my sleep! The first time I was living at home and not long after going to sleep I walked out of my room and my sister was sitting at the living room table (she hadn’t gone to sleep yet). Apparently, I gave a little wave to her and walked to the bathroom, shut the door and got in the shower. I was literally about to wash my hair when my sister walks in and was like, “what are you doing, it’s 1 o’clock in the morning?!”
I’ve also been known to sleep talk and snore, and not long ago I tried to video call some people in my sleep! But people can do all sorts of things in their sleep. I’ve heard of people mowing lawns in their sleep, walking down the street to their friends’ houses…it’s dangerous hey! The thing about being asleep is that you don’t know you’re asleep until someone tells you to wake up! And when we’re asleep we don’t care about the circumstances or situations around us.
Now not only can we fall asleep physically, but we can also fall into a spiritual sleep. And while physical sleep can be refreshing, spiritual sleep can be dangerous. It’s not always intentional, but sometimes we get tired of doing church, of living life a bit differently, reading the Bible or even praying….and we fall into a spiritual sleep. Maybe today you’re feeling asleep in your spirit. You might be feeling a lack of care for spending time with God. You might be feeling hopeless, passionless, purposeless, lacking joy.
Ephesians 5:14 says “Awake, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
And I feel that God is calling to us today, AWAKE, O SLEEPER. It’s time to wake up, and it’s time to let him stir passion inside of you again.
Romans 12:1 says, “do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.”
awakening a passion
Do you ever feel slothful? Lazy in your relationship with God? Stagnant, like you’re going nowhere in your walk with God? I’ve found in my own life that the less time I spend with God, the less time I want to spend with God. But the same is true the other way. The more time I spend with God, the more I want to spend time with God. And in the times when I’ve felt dry and passionless, it has taken 1 small step, 1 small decision for me to turn back, and God begins to stir my heart again. The more passion we have for God, the more he AWAKENS passions in us. He stirs something inside of us. His heart. A passion for his people. A passion to do his work. A passion for life. AWAKE, child.
We don’t need to awake simply for ourselves, but the call to AWAKE is for others. There are people around us every day who are without hope, without joy, without life. People who live in deep depression and anxiety, people simply trying to survive, to get through the day….and we HAVE THE ANSWER! It’s like on a Monday morning in winter when your bed seems a lot more inviting than getting out in the cold and going to school. If Christ has changed your life, if he has given you hope or joy, then you understand the power the gospel carries. And I really feel like God wants to stir our hearts again this morning to AWAKE. Don’t fall asleep, don’t fall into apathy. We have to care.
HOW DO WE AWAKE?
So maybe you feel asleep in your spirit. How do we AWAKE? How do we get passion again? How do we re-engage? Well in order to be passionate and AWAKE our souls, we need to be spending time with God, allowing him to breathe life into us again. He wants to spend time with you; to love you and to bring you peace.
You know, God really LOVES you and is INFINITELY more passionate about you than you will ever be about him. I encourage you to seek out what God is passionate about. Who God is passionate about. He wants to help you and his desire is for you to be passionate. To have an awakened spirit. You have a choice to engage with God, and you also have the choice to live a passionless life. God is not one to impose himself on you – you have free will; it’s your decision. But if you will give God the space to speak into your life, he will. There absolutely is grace for you when you are feeling sluggish. But do you ever feel like if you sleep in too long you are wasting part of the day? Jesus knows that by sleeping too long you’re going to miss out on all that he has for you.
I encourage you to set aside some time today to sit with God and let Him AWAKE your soul. Let Him begin to stir again inside of you, let Him breathe life into you again.
