Art of the Meander: Discovering Your Worth & Value From Nature

If you need confirmation that God exists, you only need to go for a wander in nature to find evidence. A few steps in a garden, park, forest or beach and you will see an infinite amount of intricately made flowers, birds, animals, trees, plants and creatures of the sea. Incredible thoughts, plans, and a great purpose is put into every living thing including humans made in love and in God’s image.

Genesis 1:27-28 - "God created man in His own image. He created male and female, He created them. He blessed them and God said to them “be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth”.

It was all created for us to be in relationship with, to nurture and enjoy. To be amazed by its incredible design, colour and beauty. It amazes me when I study a single flower or watch the wild birds that come to my balcony, rainbow lorikeets to be exact. The most beautifully coloured birds with red, yellow, blue and green in multiple shades, placed on their body like a live painting. I watch how by design:

  • They can fly through a small space;

  • Have a specific sound to chat to each other and another to chat to me;

  • A sonar-like ping to notify where they are to the others in their flock - who are at a distance;

  • The unique dance they make just before they mate;

  • And the different types of nests that each species makes for their young.

How can observing or experiencing nature, help us to connect with God or experience Him?

  • Fresh air and sunlight improve our outlook and health.

  • It is often a quietening experience, even if we are walking, running or swimming, there is a chance to connect with God’s peace.

  • An intricate, perfectly symmetrical design in a flower, can bring an awareness of how special we are. If He made (and makes) every flower, every day, different – then we can understand how beautiful and wonderful it is how He made you.

  • We can flip our thoughts, with the realisation that God is so much bigger than when we feel the world is too heavy or our problems are caving in on us. By getting out and seeing a mountain or a huge tree, can confirm this and that He is with you and wants to help you.

When you see the next sunrise or sunset, stop and look at how many different colours and cloud formations are in the sky. If you look, you will see that there are not only gorgeous colours in the main event where the sun is coming up or retreating, but turn around and at the opposite part of the sky there is an afterglow or reflection which is completely different. This changes by the minute, and by the day – no two are the same. Then have a think about how you view yourself, are you seeing yourself in God’s eyes? You are not the same as anyone else who has been on earth, or who will come later. So why would you compare yourself to another person? You have been given a specific sounding voice, walk, your smell, look, name, thoughts are all unique and different to others. Everything about you is unique for the plan and purpose that God has for your life.

Psalm 139:14 - “I will give thanks to you God, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, wonderful are your works and I know that well”.

Next time you are out in nature, look for God and ask Him how He made you to be different and special to every other human being.
